Exhibitor Awards
There are numerous ways to receive recognition at the Market Animal Show. This brief overview of awards will give each exhibitor a better understanding of the awards they are eligible to receive.
***Record books must be completed and turned in to be eligible or any award.
Class Awards
For all classes of lambs, hogs, steers, and feeder calves each exhibitor will receive a small monetary award for their placing and participation in the class.
Record Book Awards
Record book award participants are divided into the following three classes.
- Junior Class: 9-11 years of age prior to September 30, 2005
- Intermediate Class: 12-13 years of age prior to September 30, 2005
- Senior Class: 14-19 years of age prior to September 30, 2005
Steer Awards
Awards are given to the grand champion and reserve grand champion steers.
- Jim Coffey Memorial Award
This award is presented to the exhibitor of the grand champion steer by the Coffey family.
- Beef Performance Award
This award is based on the rate of weight gain from weigh-in to show date. Steer must grade choice or better to be eligible for this award.
Lamb Awards
Awards are given to the grand champion and reserve grand champion lambs.
Virginia Dorset Association Award
The Virginia Dorset Association will give a monetary award to the grand champion and reserve grand champion lamb if they are Dorsets.
George A. Beam Memorial Award
Recipients of this award will be based on the total amount of points earned, based on the following:

Hog Awards
Awards are given to the grand champion and reserve grand champion lambs.
Virginia Pork Industry Association Award - The winner will be selected by the total number of points accumulated in the show by the following point system:
1st place - 5 points 2nd place - 4 points 3rd place - 3 points
for placings in the single, fitting, and showing classes. In case of a tie, the tying exhibitor placing highest in the fitting & showing class will receive the award.
Character Counts Awards
An award will be given to one exhibitor for each of the following pillars, who best demonstrates these traits. The MAS committee welcomes recommendations from anyone viewing or participating in the Show and Sale.
Trustworthiness - Being honest and loyal, keeping promises.
Respect - Showing others that they are valued for who they are, for their character.
Responsibility - Doing what you are supposed to do, fulfilling obligations, following through.
Fairness - Playing by the rules, taking turns, sharing, listening to what others say.
Caring - Being kind, helpful, and generous to everyone.
Citizenship - Doing your share to make your community a better place for everyone.
Showmanship Awards
Showmanship awards are award to exhibitors who fall into the following classes for each species.
Junior Class: 9-11 years of age prior to September 30, 2005
Senior Class: 14-19 years of age prior to September 30, 2005
Novice: Classification applies to exhibitors that have not participated in the show until this year.

R.L. Coffey Junior Achievement Award
Presented by Woodrow Wilson District Ruritans. Recipient selection based on point totals earned as follows:

Alton Lewis Award (for first year exhibitors)
Presented by Sherando-Lyndhurst Ruritan Club and is based on the same point system as the R.L. Coffey Award.
Vaughan Ashby Citizenship Award
Qualified applicants for this award must be a senior exhibitor that has shown for at least 3 years, and who is a high school junior or senior. The recipient of this award will be chosen based on their display of good character, leadership, and citizenship, within the community. These are a few of the characteristics that exemplify Vaughan Ashby and his support of the community, as well as the 4-H & FFA Market Animal Show. The ideal candidate shall be or have been involved in the 4-H, FFA, school, and community activities and shall exhibit a positive and helpful attitude at the Market Animal Show.
